Yet, how much attention do we really pay to this?
In my last article, I rated Authenticity as the single most important factor in interviews. On the other hand, if you ask candidates to rate smart appearances, they would say it is the least contributing factor to their success. I wish that were true! Appearance ideally should not influence hiring decisions! It feels unfair. I want to empathize and say yes – but, in reality, appearance does carry quite a bit of weight.
Fast forward one hundred years, interviewees will most probably be sitting across from human robots and things will look very different. But for now, we are not going anywhere. We will still sit right across from a human being who, by nature and evolution, WILL judge us by how professional we look! It is true and the sooner we accept it, the better off we will be.
So, if things aren’t changing anytime soon, how can we make the best out of the situation?
Of course, smart appearance should not be confused with overdressing or trying to look like a movie star. What you wear should reflect your personality. If you are not comfortable in your skin, it reflects on the outside! Remember how I discussed this in my last article The A of CASE (scroll to the bottom of the article to read the Fun Fact section).
